? From Sprig to Your Sod Delivery: How Sod Grows Before It Reaches Your Yard
When you see that pallet of fresh-cut sod on your driveway — thick, green, and ready to transform your lawn — it’s easy to forget just how much work it took to get it there. Sod doesn’t happen overnight. It’s planned, sprigged, grown, managed, mowed, sprayed, cut, stacked, and hauled before it ever shows up at your property.
Here’s the full story — from sprigs to doorstep — so you know exactly what you’re getting when you buy high-quality sod in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, or Coweta.
? Step 1: Sprigging — Where Sod Begins
Sod starts with sprigs — small, living cuttings of mature grass that include pieces of stolon and rhizome. These sprigs are what we press into prepped soil on the sod farm, typically using a sprig planter across wide open fields.
Each sprig is like a spark. Once it hits healthy ground, it starts rooting and spreading — slowly but surely — to knit together into a full sod mat.
Bermuda and Zoysia sod both start from sprigs. Fescue sod is seeded, not sprigged.
? Step 2: Establishment and Grow-In
Once sprigged, the sod field goes through a full grow-in cycle, which can take anywhere from 6 months to 18 months depending on the sod type, weather, and season.
During this stage, sod is:
- Irrigated regularly to help sprigs root deep
- Fertilized to push growth and density
- Sprayed to control weeds, disease, and insects
- Mowed consistently to train the sod for future lawns
Zoysia sod grows slower, so it needs more time to fill in. Bermuda sod fills in faster, but still requires months of maintenance before it’s field-ready.
In the heart of summer 2025, the sod growing in Oklahoma is thick, green, and strong from the rains — perfect for harvesting.
? Step 3: Pre-Harvest Conditioning
About 2–3 weeks before harvest, the sod farm team begins conditioning the field for cutting. This means:
- Scaling back irrigation to let the sod firm up
- Double mowing to tighten the sod canopy
- Checking moisture levels in the root zone
- Inspecting for weak areas or uneven growth
Why does this matter? Because sod has to hold together in transport. The root layer, known as the sod mat, needs to stay dense and intact or you’ll end up with rolls that fall apart before install.
? Step 4: Sod Harvesting
When it’s time to cut, we roll out sod harvesters — precision machines that slice sod just below the root layer, then either roll it or stack it onto pallets.
- Big roll sod is often used for large fields or athletic surfaces
- Slab or mini roll sod is used for residential lawns and smaller installs
Each pallet typically contains:
- 500 sq ft of Bermuda sod (mini rolls or slabs)
- 400 sq ft of Zoysia sod (slower-growing = tighter root mat)
- 500 sq ft of Fescue sod (softer and heavier when wet)
Each piece of sod is cut tight and clean so it installs smooth and knits fast into your soil.
If you’re ordering sod in Coweta or Broken Arrow this July, we’re cutting in the early morning and delivering same-day to beat the heat.
? Step 5: Stacking, Loading, and Transporting Sod
Fresh-cut sod doesn’t wait.
After harvesting, sod is immediately stacked onto pallets, then moved onto flatbed trucks or gooseneck trailers for same-day or next-day delivery.
Timing is everything. Sod is a living product. It starts to degrade once it’s cut, especially in summer. That’s why we:
- Harvest in the cool of the morning
- Spray water lightly on the top of stacks
- Wrap pallets only when needed (to prevent overheating)
- Deliver to zip codes across Tulsa (74133, 74136), Broken Arrow (74012, 74014), and Coweta (74429) within hours of harvest
We schedule deliveries by property size and sod type, so a homeowner ordering 1,200 sq ft of Bermuda sod might get a single pallet, while a contractor picking up 10,000 sq ft of Fescue sod will get a full flatbed drop.
? Step 6: Sod Delivery and Drop-Off
Your sod arrives fresh, stacked, and field-tight — ready for install. We coordinate with you to ensure:
- Drop location makes install easy (usually driveway or curbside)
- Early delivery (7–10AM) keeps the sod cool and helps beat heat stress
- Install tips and watering guides are provided if you’re doing DIY
? Pro tip: Install sod within 12–24 hours of delivery for best rooting success. The fresher the sod, the faster it locks into your soil.
